How to add a Video Background to your website!

Learn about its purpose and how to add them to your pages

The Video Background will replace the 'Hero Video' Element. The reason for this, is that the current Hero Video does not work on mobile, which is not a great user experience. More users are on mobile and they are used to seeing video content wherever they browse. The Video Background element does not have sound, so it is really meant as a 'background' feature.

The goal of the Video Background:

  • Allows users to see Video on Mobile without impacting page speed
  • We want to use Video Backgrounds to showcase cinematic style, visually exciting content, as a way to immerse users into the FOUR PAWS world
  • As a background video, it can better tell a story, and adds more emotion than just an image
  • Improve engagement and interest in our work

Important things to note

  • First, determine where you want to display this type of video. We currently use the ‘Hero Video’ element, which does not work on Mobile. Everyone needs to replace them with the new Video Background element, or a regular YouTube video, if that makes more sense. This sheet contains a list of links to pages with Hero Videos on our websites. List of Hero Videos on Various Websites. You can go through it and determine which videos you should replace. Please do this first, and highlight the row in GREEN once you have exchanged/removed the old Hero Video Element.
  • If you would like to use any videos in the list (or other videos you find on our FOUR PAWS YouTube channels), they must focus on animals or landscapes and not contain any text (e.g. subtitles). See this example. Other examples of other websites with great 'Video backgrounds': The Met Museum, Costaz Real Estate Agency
  • You may want to use a video that does not meet the criteria for this element. AVP will need to edit the footage. You can send a request to the AVP Team via their Monday Request tool at this link: AVP Video Request Form
  • Please see the image below and select the following for numbers 4, 5, and 5.4 of the form:

Example of the Monday AVP Form

4. Choose: Video, photo & Thumbnail 5. Video editing 5.4 Media formats: Website Video Background

Here is an example of how you could set up the content/briefing details for number 6. on the Monday Form. Please note, if you want to just slightly change an existing video, you can add the YouTube link, and add the specific changes needed:

6.Content/Briefing

Overall concept: A 'Video Background' for the website, to showcase the sanctuary.
Cinematic shots of the landscape and the animals.
E.g. Similar to this video, but without the end scene with the black background at the end: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaBnVY-DjKM

Target Audience: For website visitors who want to get to know the work of FP or the Sanctuary.

Specifics: No text on the video, just clips of sanctuary shots together. No sound or sublines is necessary.

Length: Max 1 minute long

The video will loop, so no static endscreen is required.

After the Video is Created by AVP

  • AVP can either send it to you (if you have access to YT) or to Digital Comms then someone from Digital Comms will add the video to YouTube (but it will be unlisted, meaning the public won't see it there).
  • You will then receive the YouTube link from Digital Comms/AVP and can then add it to your page.
  • Simply add a Video Background element to your Landing, Promotion or Home page, and add the YouTube link, using the second part of the YouTube share link. I.e. just copy the bolded part: https://youtu.be/XaBnVY-DjKM to the inspector in the ID spot.
  • Select Full Width in the inspector. You can also add a button with a CTA. We reccommend using the 'Dark Left' font style, in case some parts of your video are very bright - otherwise the text will be hard to read.
  • See the example below:

Important!

So that people do not request the SAME video to AVP, after you have sent a request to AVP, please add the YouTube link here directly in this Quote element.
