Understanding Moulting in Dogs and Cats

Tips for pet owners regarding the seasonal coat changes

13.5.2025

Shedding is a natural process for both dogs and cats. Depending on the breed, some pets shed fur all year round, while others do so seasonally.1,2 Typically, seasonal shedders will lose their coat in spring and autumn. During spring, dogs and cats shed their thick winter coat (particularly the undercoat), to help them cope with rising temperatures. In autumn, their coat grows back to provide warmth against the impending cold. This entire process is hormonally controlled and influenced by changes in daylight and temperature.3-6 The shedding and regrowth cycle can take up to six or seven weeks. Dogs and cats tend to shed more heavily in spring than in autumn, as their winter coats are generally much thicker.

To help pets during shedding season, FOUR PAWS has compiled some useful tips for pet owners.

Regular grooming is important

When your pet is shedding their fur, you can help them during this coat change by using an appropriate brush and grooming them daily. This practice will remove dead hair and dirt while also stimulating blood circulation, which supports the growth of the new coat.7

Advice on removing cat hair

Why dog hair does not belong in a bird's nest

Many dog owners believe that they are helping birds build their nests by leaving dog hair outside. While this is well-intentioned, it can actually have fatal consequences for the young birds. Chemical residues in dog fur are problematic, such as the insecticides contained in 'spot-on' treatments that help prevent ticks, fleas, or other parasites.

Leftover shampoo, medication or skincare products can pose significant dangers to sensitive chicks and in extreme cases, it can cost these offspring their lives. Another potential hazard is long dog hair. The hair can wrap around the delicate legs, wings or claws of the young birds, which, in severe situations, can lead to strangulation or the constriction of limbs, potentially causing serious injuries or even death.

Nutrition for healthy fur

Providing your pet with a nutritious diet is essential for maintaining healthy fur. During the shedding process, you can support your pet’s coat change with important nutrients, including:

  • Fatty acids: Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are recommended. They nourish the skin and promote healthy hair growth.8 These beneficial substances can be found in fish and fish oil, as well as in meat and various oils, such as evening primrose, borage and sunflower oil.9,10
  • Proteins: Good sources of protein include eggs, muscle meat (such as beef, chicken, and lamb), offal, and grains like wheat and corn.11
  • Trace elements: Like iodine, copper, and zinc can be provided through various foods, including meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, and grain products.12
  • Vitamins: Important vitamins for fur health include vitamin A, vitamin E, the B vitamins, and biotin.7,8

All the nutrients mentioned above are also available as feed additives. It is especially important to ensure a balanced diet rich in these ingredients during shedding periods.

Medical reasons for hair loss

It's also important to be aware that hair loss can indicate underlying medical issues that require treatment.

  • Skin issues and diseases: Infestations by fleas, lice, and mites can lead to excessive hair loss.15
  • Allergies: These can be triggered by certain foods, medications, care products and environmental factors such as pollen.16
  • Unbalanced diet: If a diet lacks sufficient protein and fat, then hair loss may occur.17
  • Diseases: Loss of fur can indicate liver or kidney disease, hypothyroidism, autoimmune disorders, or Cushing's syndrome.18-21
  • Stress and anxiety: These psychological conditions can affect dogs and cats, leading to fur loss. This fur loss may be triggered by changes in routine, adjustments in the household as new arrivals (a new pet), or separation anxiety. In these cases, the animals often cause the fur loss themselves through excessive grooming, scratching, biting, or nibbling.22,23

Shedding and losing fur is a normal and natural process for pets. However, dog and cat owners can help support their pets during this time. It is important to be mindful of excessive or unusual shedding, as this may indicate underlying health issues that require attention.
