Are cat collars safe? Potential dangers cat owners must know

10.8.2022

While we don’t raise an eyebrow if we see a dog wearing a collar, it’s a different story when it comes to our feline friends. A cat wearing a collar is a less common sight. People sometimes choose to put a collar on their cat to make it clear that the animal has an owner. The motive may be laudable, but cat owners who opt for a collar must take care to prevent their pet from being injured.

Possible dangers

Collars can be dangerous for cats if they don’t have a safety clasp, are elastic or fit poorly. There are many potential dangers associated with collars – for example:

  • The cat can get their paw or claws caught up in the collar while trying to get the collar off or to scratch an ear.
  • Collars can cause injury to the neck area if they are too tight and chafe.
  • The cat’s lower jaw can get caught under the collar, which will prevent them from closing their mouth.
  • There is a risk that the cat may be choked or strangled if the collar becomes snagged on a nearby object.

What to look for in a collar

In view of the fact that collars can pose a danger to cats, you should pay special attention to the following points:

  • If a collar is to be used, it is advisable to choose one with a safety clasp that releases as soon as tension is applied to the collar.
  • Make sure the collar fits properly. You should be able to comfortably slide one or two fingers under the collar when your cat is wearing it.
  • Check the fit of the collar regularly, especially if your cat is still growing.

It’s important to be aware of the risks when using a collar for your cat. Even supposedly “safe” products can’t offer an absolute guarantee that your pet will be protected from injury or strangulation.

Flea collars

Bear in mind that flea collars can pose a similar danger to regular collars. If you want to be on the safe side, avoid flea collars altogether and use spot-on preparations instead.
