LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, a FOUR PAWS project located in Bethlehem, Free State, South Africa, offers a unique opportunity for animal lovers to contribute to the welfare of rescued big cats.

As a volunteer, you’ll play a crucial role in caring for these regal animals while learning about animal welfare.

What We Offer

Species-Appropriate Setting: At LIONSROCK, big cats live in a species-appropriate environment. Many of them feel grass under their paws for the first time upon arrival.

Animal Care and Freedom: Volunteers directly contribute to giving these big cats the care and freedom they deserve.

Learning Experience: Gain insights into animal welfare while working closely with the animals.

Comfortable Accommodation: Volunteers stay on the sanctuary grounds in comfortable housing named “Sussana.” a historical farmhouse that has been renovated into a stunningly new "green" building which boasts the choice of shared or single accommodation.

Fully Equipped Kitchen: Access to a fully equipped kitchen that allows volunteers to cook together or come together to enjoy a typical South African braai (BBQ).

Stunning Views: Wake up to the roar of lions and the wandering free-roaming wildlife while you enjoy breathtaking views of the sanctuary.

Requirements

  • Love of Animals: Volunteers should have a passion for animals, especially big cats.
  • Outdoor Work: Be prepared to work outside in any weather.
  • Nature and Welfare: Appreciate nature and animal welfare.
  • Learning Attitude: Willingness to learn and observe.
  • Fluency in English: Spoken and written English proficiency.
  • Minimum Age: 18 years.
  • Preferred Background: Students of biology, nutrition, animal behaviour, veterinary or other animal welfare focused studies are welcome but not required.
  • Minimum Stay: 4 weeks.

Your main tasks will include

Monitoring Specific Animals: Closely monitor specific animals to ensure their well-being.

Behaviour Observation: Observe the animals’ behaviour and progress.

Trap Cameras: Assist with managing trap cameras for monitoring the big cats.

Enrichment Measures: Prepare and implement enrichment measures.

Enclosure Maintenance: Clean and maintain the animals’ enclosures.

While working five days a week, volunteers have plenty of free time to explore the Free State - Visit nearby towns, and experience warm South African hospitality.
