Lionesses Kolwezi and Kalemi in their species appropriate enclosure

Lions Lubumbashi, Kalemi and Kolwezi

three lions Kalemi, Kolwezi, and Lubumbashi were born within the rusty confines of the Lubumbashi Zoo.

In the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo, three lions Kalemi, Kolwezi, and Lubumbashi were born on July day in 2009. Their lives unfolded within the rusty confines of the Lubumbashi Zoo, a place marked by neglect and hardship. But destiny had other plans, a sanctuary awaited them - LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary.

The Lubumbashi Zoo faced hardship. Its animals, Kalemi, Kolwezi, and Lubumbashi among them, endured hunger, inadequate care, and dilapidated cages. Despite the presence of non-profit organisations, urgent social needs diverted attention away from the zoo. Ordinary citizens like Mrs. Lydia Forrest became the lifeline for these forgotten creatures.

In May 2007, Mrs. Forrest and a group of compassionate women founded AZLU (Amis du Zoo de Lubumbashi). They collected funds, stepped into the zoo’s daily operations, and provided the basics such as food, fresh water, and clean enclosures. The animals’ survival rested on their efforts.

In the heart of Katanga Province, three cities lent their names to the cubs: Kalemi, Kolwezi, and Lubumbashi. Yet the zoo’s limitations loomed - the trio needed space and care beyond its means. Another state zoo beckoned, but conditions there offered no comfort.

Instead, destiny led them to LIONSROCK. On March 31, 2010, Kalemi, Kolwezi, and Lubumbashi stepped into their new forever home. Their enclosure, partly funded by Mr. and Mrs. Forrest, offered a species-appropriate environment that the lions needed.
