HILDEGARD PIRKER

Meet LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary's Sanctuary Manager

Hildegard Pirker’s journey with animal care began as the Chief Animal Keeper at Safari Park Gänserndorf near Vienna. When the safari park faced bankruptcy in 2004, she poured her heart and energy into finding new homes for approximately 700 animals. This pivotal moment marked the start of her incredible adventure with FOUR PAWS.

In 2005, Hildegard joined FOUR PAWS, an international animal welfare organization. Her dedication led her to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa, where she played a crucial role in transferring ten lions from the former safari park to their new home. Since 2008, she has overseen the well-being of more than 100 big cats at LIONSROCK.

Hildegard’s commitment to the animals is unwavering. She knows each individual cat intimately, recognising when something is not right and seizing opportunities for socialisation. Her tireless efforts ensure that these regal animals receive the best care and a second chance at life.

Her journey does not end here as she continues to seek the out big cats in need of shelter, safety and security from the unjust treatment of these magnificent animals. Together with FOUR PAWS and a dedicated team here at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, they remain focused on the needs of the animals under their care and will selflessly care for those who will one day call this vast landscape their forever home.

"I am only one person; I CAN make a difference"
