Quality Check your work Before You Publish the First Time
What to keep in mind before a page goes online
You have just created the page, implemented all the content, filled in the information in the inspector and think you are ready to publish…
…or you got asked to check the page according to the 4-eyes-principle.
Stop for a minute and wait, get up, turn around, sit down again and switch into user perspective.
4 eyes see more than 2, especially with those glasses.
Is the page visually appealing?
- Consistency?
- No empty spaces (e.g. end of HL, subline, before texts or at the end of content text)?
- Balanced text and image/content breaker proportion?
- About the images: Correct cropping, alt texts and titles for all images on page (all images also have to have a copyright--> check in frontend)?
- Do all the links work? Links – should be tested in the frontend
- Have you checked the mobile version?
- CTA full width: are the texts too long (for mobile version)?
First impression is alright? Go ahead and look at the details:
- Is the Headline (HL) okay?
- Around 8 words (incl. 1-2 SEO keywords)?
- First letters in caps (except for IPR HLs)? https://capitalizemytitle.com/ (Tool to capitalise the title)
- Is the Subline (SL) okay?
- Not too long, different choice of words compared to the HL? Does it work well/together?
- Do you really think that the SL catches the attention of the reader?
- What about the text:
- Are the sentences not too long and complex? If the sentence is longer than 3 lines on the desktop, it would be best to break it up
- Sublines in the text to summarise/introduce a paragraph
- How is the information structured? Are the important facts in the beginning of the page?
- Remember: People are lazy when it comes to reading
Coming to an end…
- Is the CTA okay? Does the image work? Can you read the HL? Does the link work? Does the button have the right colour e.g. for primary, petition, donation?
- Check all tabs in the inspector (right side of the page. Pencil icon, cog icon, and so on.)
- Tab 1) Author, publication date, page title, URL, page image and mobile image, image alt text and title, taxonomies, related content
- Tab 2) Hide in Menu box (if needed)
- Tab 3) Description, Keywords, Open graph (Article), Twitter card (Summary Card with Large Image)
