TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary is situated in the Rhineland-Palatinate state in western Germany, 15 km from the town of Pirmasens. The name TIERART is short for TIER- und ARTenschutz which is German for animals and species protection and conservation.

This project is the result of a cooperation between FOUR PAWS and the association TIERART e.V., which was established in 1999. In 2000, the association bought a former US Army barrack to rehome exotic and native wild animals. The property was developed due to the lack of such facilities in Germany.

In 2013, the cooperation started with the intention to set up species appropriate facilities for big cats. FOUR PAWS financially supported the construction of these facilities and provided experience and expertise to ensure the highest animal welfare standards for the big cat care. In July 2015, the first enclosures for big cats were completed.

To date, the sanctuary has been working with a rehabilitation program for wildcat, lynx, deer, fox, martens, hedgehog, squirrel, badger and all other wildlife (every year more than 100 animals get released into the wild again).

Die VIER PFOTEN Wildtierstation TIERART ist das Ergebnis einer Kooperation von VIER PFOTEN und dem Verein TIERART e.V., der 1999 gegründet wurde. Im Jahr 2000 kaufte der Verein ein früheres US-Militärgelände, um heimischen und exotischen Wildtieren ein neues Zuhause zu geben. Ein wesentlicher Beweggrund war der landesweite Mangel solcher Institutionen in Deutschland. TIERART liegt in Rheinland-Pfalz im Westen Deutschlands, 15 km entfernt von der Stadt Pirmasens.

Seit 2013 kooperiert TIERART e.V. mit VIER PFOTEN mit dem gemeinsamen Ziel, eine artgemäße Anlage für Großkatzen zu schaffen. VIER PFOTEN hat den Bau der Station finanziell unterstützt und sorgte durch inhaltliche Beratung dafür, dass beste Tierschutz-Standards beim Bau der Großkatzen-Gehege berücksichtigt wurden. Im Juli 2015 wurden die ersten Gehege fertiggestellt. Mitte 2016 gründeten VIER PFOTEN und TIERART e.V. zusammen die TIERART gemeinnützige GmbH.

TIERART bietet Großkatzen ein Zuhause, die aus schlechten Haltungsbedingungen wie Zirkussen und privater Haltung gerettet wurden. Einige Tiere bleiben aufgrund schlechter Gesundheitsbedingungen dauerhaft im TIERART, wofür sie intensive medizinische und spezielle Pflege benötigen, wie individuelle Bereicherung und Verhaltenstraining. Tiere in guter Gesundheit können nach LIONSROCK umgesiedelt werden, wo sie mehr Platz und Unabhängigkeit geniessen. Im Jahr 2019 überführte VIER PFOTEN zwei junge Tiger von TIERART nach LIONSROCK.

Die Wildtierstation reicht über ein Gebiet von 14 Hektar. Die drei Großkatzen-Gehege nehmen dabei mehr als 2.800 Quadratmeter ein. Im restlichen Tierschutzzentrum werden einheimische Wildtiere rehabilitiert. Zukünftige Pläne berücksichtigen den Bau von mehr Großkatzen-Gehegen und eine Zusammenarbeit mit einem Wolf-Projekt sowie dem EU LIFE Projekt, das das Ziel hat verletzte oder verwaiste Luchse zu rehabilitieren und anschließend wieder in der Wildnis anzusiedeln. Für den nächsten Umbau sind vier neue Gehege geplant.

TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary provides a home to big cats rescued from poor keeping conditions, like circuses and private keeping. Some animals stay permanently at TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary due to poor health conditions, for which they need intensive medical and special care, like individual enrichment and behavioural training. Animals in good health can be relocated to LIONSROCK, where they can enjoy more space and independence. In 2019, FOUR PAWS transferred two young tigers from TIERART to LIONSROCK. 

The sanctuary encompasses a total area of 14 hectares. The three big cat enclosures takes up more than 2,800 square meters. In the rest of the sanctuary, native wildlife species are rehabilitated. Future plans include the construction of more big cat enclosures and collaborations for a wolf project as well as an EU LIFE project that aims to reintroduce injured and orphaned lynx back into the wild after their rehabilitation. For the next construction phase a total of four new enclosures are planned.

Neben der VIER PFOTEN Großkatzenstation beherbergt und versorgt TIERART e.V. zahlreiche heimische Wildtiere wie Füchse, Dachse, Wildkatzen, Hasen, Rehe, Waschbären, Siebenschläfer und Igel. 

Seit 2017 betreibt TIERART eine Auffangstation für Luchse in Kooperation mit dem EU-LIFE-LUCHS Projekt. Hier werden verletzte oder verwaiste Luchse aus dem Wiederansiedlungsprogramm aufgenommen, gepflegt und anschließend wieder im Pfälzerwald ausgewildert. 2017 und 2018 konnten weitere Gehege für Wildkatzen, Pastell-Füchse, Rotfüchse und Waschbären geplant und gebaut werden. 

Tiere in TIERART werden jährlich gründlich untersucht: Zahnbehandlungen, Röntgen und Blutproben werden genommen, je nach Bedarf und Evaluation des Zustandes der Tiere. Auch Impfungen werden durchgeführt. Die Größe des Ärzteteams wird durch die Anzahl der zu behandelnden Tiere und die erforderliche Behandlung bestimmt.

Animals at TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary are thoroughly examined annually: dental checks, x-rays and blood samples are taken, based on the assessment/evaluation of the animals and their needs. Vaccinations are administered too. The size of the medical team will be determined by the number of animals to be treated and what treatment is required.

TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary is open to the public on weekends and holidays between Easter and end of November. TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary is an unique destination with a combination of animal welfare and tourism. This destination offers guided tours and educational activities for all guests.
