The construction of BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh started in December 2016. Until now, six spacious outdoor enclosures have been created at the sanctuary, three bear houses with indoor dens, a quarantine station and a full-equipped veterinary unit, a feeding kitchen and an administrative building. BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh currently offers suitable living conditions for up to 50 bears. The overall goal is to expand the sanctuary to 10 ha and to be able to house 100 rescued bile bears in total over the upcoming years.

Until now, we have been able to rescue and house more than 60 bears at BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh. Further bear rescue missions are already being planned.

Visitors are invited to share their journey with family and friends by bringing them a gift from BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh: the sanctuary's own shop sells environmentally friendly and locally produced souvenirs. At BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh, you can also savour traditional Vietnamese vegetarian and vegan dishes made with fresh, local ingredients at the onsite bistro and enjoy the tranquil views across the sanctuary.

Even though the production of bear bile and trading in bear products are forbidden by law in Vietnam, bear bile farming and illegal bile extraction still take place. The Vietnamese government has taken firm legislative steps to end bear farming in Vietnam, however, there are still so-called 'bile bears' – mainly Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) – living in deplorable conditions on bear farms. These animals suffer in tiny metal cages, spending their days in an almost vegetative state, half-starved and dehydrated. With the newly built BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh, FOUR PAWS aims to contribute significantly to end bear farming in Vietnam. The Sanctuary will boost government efforts to enforce the existing laws that prohibit the abuse of bears for bile extraction by providing a place for bears – whether confiscated or voluntarily given up by their owners – to find a haven where they will be cared for properly.
